Sompo to sponsor new PGA Tour tournament
The PGA Tour has announced a multiyear agreement with global insurance company Sompo, marking a new chapter for the sport's professional circuit. Starting in 2027, Sompo will serve as the title sponsor for a full-field event held at the Silverado Resort North Course in Napa, California, from July 29 through August 1.
Following this debut, the partnership will move into a new phase for the 2028 season. The tournament will transition into a Championship Series event and relocate to a new market, with the specific location scheduled for announcement in the coming months.
This partnership follows recent structural changes within the PGA Tour. The Championship Series aims to showcase the sport's top competitors across roughly 24 events each season. These tournaments include major championships, the Players, and international team events like the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup.
By signing with a major financial services player like Sompo, the tour continues to secure capital for its new competition model. This structure now splits the tour into two distinct tiers: the Championship Series for top-ranked players and the Challenger Series, which provides a path for golfers to earn their way into the elite track through consistent performance.
