MLBPA calls to preserve draft system after owners' proposal

The Major League Baseball Players Association issued a proposal on Tuesday aimed at preserving the current domestic draft system. This move acts as a direct counter to a proposal from team owners submitted last month. While the owners seek to shorten the draft from 20 rounds to 12 and reduce amateur signing bonus pools by $150 million, the players' union advocates for maintaining the existing structure while expanding eligibility for younger athletes.

The union proposal suggests that college players should be eligible for the draft after their sophomore years, removing current age restrictions. This adjustment aims to keep baseball competitive against collegiate sports programs that offer significant name, image, and likeness compensation. By allowing earlier eligibility, the union hopes to prevent young talent from choosing other professional paths.

Financial terms remain a point of contention. The union proposes that signing bonus pools continue to grow alongside industry revenues. They also want to provide specific support for small-market teams. Under the union plan, these teams could add $2 million to their bonus pools over five years, with an additional $1 million bonus for teams that qualify for the postseason. This framework is designed to protect competitive balance, ensuring smaller clubs remain relevant in the talent acquisition process.

Furthermore, the union proposed a reduction in tax penalties for teams that exceed their spending pools. Currently, teams face heavy fines and the loss of draft picks for overspending. The union wants to raise these thresholds, allowing for a 15% overage before a team loses a pick. They also suggested moving the draft date from July to June and creating new opportunities for trading picks in the first 10 rounds. This counter-proposal sets the stage for ongoing labor negotiations as both sides attempt to define the future of the league’s talent pipeline.
