Rangers draft pick Brody Bumila to have Tommy John surgery

The Texas Rangers have signed their third-round draft pick, Brody Bumila, to a 2.75 million dollar contract. This agreement arrives despite the news that the 18-year-old pitcher requires Tommy John surgery to address ulnar collateral ligament damage in his left elbow.

Bumila is a 6-foot-9 left-hander known for a fastball that exceeds 100 mph. Before the draft, he made sure all 30 Major League Baseball teams were aware of his medical status. This transparency followed an internal-brace procedure he underwent on the same ligament in 2025.

Because of the upcoming surgery, the Rangers do not expect Bumila to return to a competitive mound until late 2027. Despite the medical setback, the organization remains committed to the development of the young pitcher, who had originally committed to the University of Texas before deciding to begin his professional career immediately.

Bumila expressed a strong desire to pursue professional baseball rather than the collegiate route. He noted that the signing bonus is a life-changing sum of money. While he remains sidelined for the immediate future, his focus is now on the recovery process and his eventual debut in the professional ranks.
