Shane van Gisbergen savors top-five effort, makes short-track strides at North Wilkesboro

Shane van Gisbergen reached a significant milestone in his oval racing career during Sunday night's Window World 450 at North Wilkesboro Speedway. The road-racing specialist piloted his No. 97 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet to a fifth-place finish, marking his first top-five result on a short track in the NASCAR Cup Series.

The performance included a moment of levity early in the race when van Gisbergen found himself at the front of the pack after passing points leader Denny Hamlin. His surprise was evident over the team radio, where he asked his crew what he should do while leading. This result followed a productive weekend at the track, including a third-place run in Saturday’s Craftsman Truck Series race.

Van Gisbergen started the 450-lap event in eighth position and quickly vaulted into the top four following a strategic two-tire pit stop. He engaged in a fierce battle at the front, leading for 49 laps and demonstrating speed that kept him competitive against Cup Series veterans throughout the evening. His ability to adapt was further highlighted by his use of road-racing techniques, such as right-foot braking, which he found effective on the 0.625-mile circuit.

Crew chief Stephen Doran noted that the additional laps in the truck series were essential for van Gisbergen’s comfort and speed during the main event. The fifth-place finish provides a major boost to his postseason aspirations, moving him 54 points above the provisional elimination line with five regular-season races remaining. This consistency on oval tracks is a critical step for his second consecutive playoff bid.

Beyond the competitive gains, the No. 97 team maintained their characteristic lighthearted approach throughout the high-pressure race. Despite the intensity of the competition, van Gisbergen and his team continued to prioritize communication and morale, proving that serious performance and a relaxed garage atmosphere can coexist on the track.
