Chris Burgess explains strategy and process behind BYU’s nonconference schedule

BYU assistant basketball coach Chris Burgess has officially finalized the nonconference schedule for the 2026-27 season. Tasked with building a competitive slate before the team enters Big 12 play, Burgess relied heavily on analytics to shape the 14-game lineup. The staff prioritized metrics such as Wins Above the Bubble and KenPom rankings to ensure the Cougars face opponents that bolster their tournament resume.

The schedule features a deliberate mix of buy games and high-profile matchups. Key dates include a game against Ohio State at the Delta Center, a trip to the Maui Invitational, and a rivalry game against San Diego State in Palm Springs. The staff opted to avoid Quad 4 opponents, aiming instead for Quad 1 and Quad 2 matchups that provide the most value for NCAA Tournament consideration.

Building this schedule required a long-term approach. Burgess analyzed the five-year historical performance of potential opponents, noting that 14 of their 18 possible foes have reached the NCAA Tournament since 2022. This strategy helps the program remain competitive even when facing the roster turnover typical of the current college sports environment.

Head coach Kevin Young remains deeply involved in the process despite his transition from the NBA. Burgess noted that Young requests data-driven context for every addition to the schedule, specifically asking how each opponent impacts the team’s overall metrics. The goal remains consistent: secure games that prepare the team for conference play while proving their worth to the selection committee.
