Jake Diebler sees Puerto Rico trip as chemistry-builder for new-look Buckeyes

Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler is taking his team to Puerto Rico this summer for a crucial early-season test. The Buckeyes will travel from July 31 through August 5 to play two scrimmages as part of an international tour. These extra games provide the team with ten additional on-campus practice sessions, offering a head start on preparing for the upcoming season.

Diebler views the trip as an opportunity to manufacture game situations that are difficult to simulate during standard workouts. With a roster featuring eight new players, including four transfers and four freshmen, the coaching staff intends to use the travel experience to build chemistry both on and off the court. The lack of detailed scouting reports on their opponents is intentional, as Diebler wants his players to solve problems and communicate while playing against unfamiliar defensive sets.

This trip replaces a previously scheduled visit to Israel that was cancelled due to circumstances outside of the program's control. Diebler is prioritizing the development of team leadership during these games, specifically looking for players to step up alongside John Mobley Jr. to help anchor the group. The coaching staff is using a specific checklist of offensive and defensive concepts that the players must execute before heading to Puerto Rico.

The intensity at recent practices suggests that Diebler is pushing his squad to be prepared before the official season tips off in November. While these exhibition games do not impact the team's record, the staff plans to use them to evaluate rotation roles and individual discipline.
