Sam Alexis has secured a court injunction allowing him to play a fifth year of college basketball. The decision follows his performance with Indiana University in Peru during the FISU America Games, where he recorded 39 points and 14 rebounds across three games. The 6-foot-9 forward previously set the Indiana single-season record for field goal percentage at 68.7 percent.
While Indiana head coach Darian DeVries has expressed interest in late roster additions, the status of Alexis remains undecided. The court order requires the NCAA to reopen the transfer portal from August 3 to August 10, meaning Alexis has the legal clearance to explore opportunities at other universities. An Indiana spokesperson has declined to comment on the matter.
Alexis sought this relief after the NCAA implemented a five-year eligibility rule that initially excluded players who finished their final season under previous guidelines. The ruling protects any school that adds him to its roster from sanctions related to the Rule of Restitution. Alongside his eligibility, Reed Bailey is currently pursuing similar court action to play this coming season.
During his time with the Hoosiers, Alexis appeared in 32 games, starting the final 23. He provided consistent interior production with 50 dunks and averaged 8.8 points per game. His return would add depth to a frontcourt that already features Aiden Sherrell and Samet Yigitoglu. The coming week will determine whether he stays in Bloomington or tests the open market.
