Ex-LSU star Demetrius Byrd arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
Demetrius Byrd, a standout on LSU's 2007 national championship team and former NFL player, was arrested this week in Miami Beach. Police charged the 40-year-old with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following an incident on a public bus.
According to the arrest report, the situation escalated when Byrd allegedly pulled a silver multi-tool from his pocket. He then opened a blade and approached another passenger while making verbal threats. The victim attempted to calm the situation but was unsuccessful.
Byrd was granted a $5,000 bond by the court. He remains in the legal system as he is required to address an outstanding warrant related to a separate domestic violence case.
Byrd is well-remembered by college football fans for his performance at LSU. He played a key role in the 2007 season, most notably catching a game-winning 22-yard touchdown pass from Matt Flynn against Auburn with only one second remaining on the clock. He concluded his career with the Tigers with 1,134 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.
After his college career, Byrd entered the NFL. The San Diego Chargers selected him in the 2009 NFL Draft, although his professional tenure was brief due to injuries sustained in a car accident just before the draft process concluded. He spent one season on the non-football injury list before his release in 2010.
