49ers' Kyle Shanahan to be limited in camp after car crash
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will have a limited role at the start of training camp following a car accident on July 14. The incident occurred near his home in northern California when he collided with an SUV. Local authorities reported that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash and both drivers cooperated with police.
Medical reports indicate that Shanahan sustained significant injuries including a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a broken hand. He also suffered a severe concussion and required over 40 stitches for facial lacerations. While he was treated at a local hospital and released the same day, his medical team has mandated a restricted schedule until his concussion symptoms subside.
The organization stated that Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster and the team coordinators will handle primary head coaching duties while Shanahan recovers. Shanahan informed his staff of the situation earlier this week, and general manager John Lynch plans to address the media this Saturday.
This marks a challenging start to the 2026 season, which represents Shanahan’s 10th year with the franchise. He currently holds 82 regular-season victories and aims to surpass Bill Walsh as the second-most winning coach in team history. The 49ers are scheduled to begin their first official practice of training camp on Sunday morning before heading to Melbourne, Australia for their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
