First Kenyan-born NFL player deported, ICE says

Daniel Adongo, the first Kenyan-born player to compete in the NFL, was deported last month following an order from an immigration judge. Adongo signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 after transitioning from a professional rugby career. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials confirmed the removal occurred on June 20, citing a visa overstay that began in 2016.

Legal records indicate Adongo faced several encounters with the justice system following his tenure in the NFL. ICE noted a 2020 misdemeanor conviction for criminal mischief, alongside other charges that were ultimately dismissed. The agency stated that recent developments in his case fell under the criteria of the Laken Riley Act, which mandates detention for undocumented individuals accused of specific property crimes.

Defense attorneys previously linked his legal issues to severe mental health struggles. Reports from medical examinations suggested he experienced acute psychosis and possible brain injuries consistent with long-term exposure to high-impact sports. His advocates argued these factors played a role in his conduct during the years following his athletic career.

While officials in the Chicago ICE office framed the removal as a public safety measure, the case highlights the tension between immigration enforcement and the medical realities faced by former professional athletes. Adongo currently resides outside the country as the legal proceedings conclude.
