San Jose Sharks’ first round draft pick finalizes plans for upcoming season

San Jose Sharks prospect Keaton Verhoeff has confirmed his plans for the upcoming hockey season. The defenseman, who was selected ninth overall in last month’s NHL draft, will return to the University of North Dakota for his sophomore campaign.

North Dakota head coach Dane Jackson confirmed that the 18-year-old athlete intends to continue his development at the collegiate level before moving to the professional ranks. Verhoeff noted that he plans to focus on specific areas of his game during this time, particularly his skating mechanics, edge work, and foot speed.

This decision aligns with the approach of Sharks management. Director of player development Todd Marchant stated that the organization prioritizes long-term success over immediate promotion. By gaining another year of experience in a high-level college program, Verhoeff aims to prepare for the demands of professional play. He is also expected to compete for a spot on the Canadian team for the upcoming World Junior Championships.

While Verhoeff continues his development in North Dakota, the Sharks are working with a roster that includes veteran acquisitions like Jacob Trouba and Darnell Nurse. This strategy provides the team time to integrate younger players without forced timelines. Management remains committed to ensuring prospects are fully prepared before making the jump to the NHL.
