NHL to produce games for Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, Wild, Blues
The National Hockey League is taking direct control over the production and distribution of local game broadcasts for four of its franchises this season. Starting in late September, the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, and St. Louis Blues will have their games produced by NHL Productions.
This shift addresses the instability created by the collapse of regional sports networks following the bankruptcy of the provider that previously handled these team broadcasts. By centralizing these operations, the league aims to secure a stable viewing experience for fans while moving away from the fractured landscape of traditional regional network agreements.
NHL leadership emphasized that this transition is a significant adjustment during an already volatile time in the media industry. The league plans to upgrade the standard of these local broadcasts by increasing camera counts, enhancing replay capabilities, and introducing updated graphics to create a professional feel comparable to national network coverage.
Existing local broadcast talent is expected to remain in place for the games. Additionally, the league has hired Rob McGlarry to serve as the general manager of local media to oversee this new initiative. This move mirrors similar steps taken by other major sports leagues as they adapt to changing media distribution models.
