Nick Foligno opens up on decision to return to Wild: ‘You have more to give’

Nick Foligno is heading into his 20th NHL season after signing a one-year deal with the Minnesota Wild. The 38-year-old forward confirmed his return this summer, ending speculation about retirement. Foligno noted that after the team's playoff exit against the Colorado Avalanche, he did not feel ready to step away. Instead, he felt a drive to compete again and pursue a championship with the current roster.

The decision to return involved a family meeting at his home in Sudbury. Foligno emphasized that his playing career depends on his family's support. His daughter Milana, who has navigated multiple surgeries for congenital heart disease, encouraged him to keep playing. She told him that she believed he had more to give to the game. With that encouragement, he committed to another year on the ice.

Foligno chose Minnesota specifically because of the group already in place. Playing alongside his brother Marcus was a major factor, and the prospect of chasing a Cup with the current core kept him from considering other offers. While the team saw departures in free agency, including Mats Zuccarello and Jake Middleton, Foligno remains optimistic. He sees the addition of Blake Coleman and Olli Maatta as a move that keeps the team competitive.

Regarding the future of superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes, Foligno expressed confidence that the team remains a destination for elite players. He pointed out the strength of the group as a reason for any player to stay. Foligno is not treating this season as a farewell tour. He intends to play with the same intensity as always, focusing on the immediate goal of winning rather than any long-term retirement plans.
