Pep Guardiola has officially declined the opportunity to become the next head coach of the Italian national team. Federation officials including Paolo Maldini and Leonardo met with Guardiola in Barcelona. They proposed a role that went beyond standard coaching duties, viewing him as the central figure for an overhaul of the entire national program. Despite the federation offering significant budget adjustments to secure his services, Guardiola rejected the proposal citing personal reasons unrelated to football operations.

Following this decision, Andrea Pirlo is now the primary candidate to fill the position left vacant by Gennaro Gattuso. Pirlo is currently working to finalize his departure from his club in the United Arab Emirates to transition into the international role. The Italian federation remains under pressure to stabilize their team after the disappointment of failing to qualify for the most recent major global tournament.

Guardiola has maintained a consistent stance regarding his immediate future after departing Manchester City. He stated previously that he intends to take a break from coaching to spend time with his family.
