WTA Memphis Classic marks triumphant return at new Leftwich Tennis Center
Professional tennis has arrived in Memphis as the WTA Memphis Classic begins at the newly renovated Leftwich Tennis Center in Audubon Park. This 32-player tournament marks a significant milestone for the city, signaling the completion of a multi-year project to modernize the municipal facility into a premier sports destination.
The site now features 24 outdoor and 12 indoor courts built by Grinder Taber Grinder. While the venue is designed to meet professional standards, it remains a public park accessible to all residents. The project represents a significant shift from the site's previous condition, moving from a space in disrepair to a centerpiece for the community.
The renovation path started with the advocacy of the late Gary Grear, who pushed for the overhaul during Jim Strickland’s term as mayor. The project gained momentum after the closure of the local Racquet Club, which left a void in the professional tennis schedule for the area. A critical donation from Fred Smith allowed the work to proceed, triggering further investment from the University of Memphis and other stakeholders.
Today, the center functions as the home for the University of Memphis tennis teams. Beyond high-level competition, the facility is operated by Tennis Memphis, an organization that integrates tennis with academic and character-building programs in local schools. The hosting of the WTA tournament is intended to connect local students with professional athletes, providing a tangible example of the sport for the next generation of players.
