McBride stated on social media that she received an unofficial invite to the upcoming 3-point contest via a text message to her agent just 48 hours before the event. She clarified that this message did not constitute a formal offer to participate.
This incident follows similar comments from New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu. Ionescu recently had to clarify her absence from the contest, confirming that she also never received a formal invitation from the league. These public statements raise questions about the organizational processes surrounding the WNBA All-Star weekend and its marquee events.
McBride pushed back against speculation regarding her absence. She noted that rumors suggesting she was afraid to compete are incorrect. The veteran guard, who is currently enjoying a high-level season, emphasized that the focus should remain on the athletes participating in the contest, including Bridget Carleton, Azzi Fudd, Natisha Hiedeman, Rhyne Howard, Marina Mabrey, and Janelle Salaün.
Despite the current friction, McBride acknowledged the skill of those set to compete on Friday.
