Israel launches $27 million quantum computing center as the industry searches for a winner
The Israel Innovation Authority is launching a new national initiative to advance quantum computing research. The project, backed by a 100 million shekel investment—roughly 27 million dollars—aims to establish a research infrastructure where companies can test and evaluate multiple quantum technologies. Since no single architecture has emerged as the definitive standard, the center will require the integration of at least three distinct processing methods.
This facility addresses a critical gap in the sector. Currently, quantum hardware remains in early development stages, often hampered by high error rates and stability issues. By providing this infrastructure, the government allows startups and academic researchers to run tests, develop algorithms, and explore commercial applications without the burden of massive independent capital investment.
The scope of the center covers the entire technical stack, ranging from qubits and control systems to software and error correction. It serves as a testing ground for potential breakthroughs in industries such as drug development, materials science, and cryptography. The operator will be responsible for providing access to diverse systems and continuously upgrading the technology to match global market advancements.
Beyond hardware access, the center is designed to build local expertise.
