WAIC 2026: Lightelligence maps AI's optical future with CPO, NPO, photonic computing
At the WAIC 2026 conference, Lightelligence highlighted a shift in the artificial intelligence sector. While the industry has prioritized raw processing speed in chips, the bottleneck is now moving data. Yichen Shen, the company's founder and chairman, identified optical interconnects, optical switching, and photonic computing as the primary solutions for this infrastructure challenge.
The current model of electrical data movement faces physical limits that constrain how quickly information can travel between processing units. By replacing copper traces with light-based transmission, companies aim to reduce power consumption while increasing throughput. Lightelligence is focusing on Co-Packaged Optics and Near-Packaged Optics to integrate these light-based solutions directly into the hardware architecture.
This approach signals a move toward optical computing systems designed to handle the massive data loads required by modern AI models. As firms compete for compute supremacy, the focus is turning toward the physical pipes that connect chips, memory, and networking hardware. Efficiency in data movement is becoming the new standard for performance in high-end data centers.
