Utah's Redtail AI supercomputer ranks among world's fastest, greenest – @theU
The University of Utah has officially entered the global supercomputing stage with its new system named Redtail. This AI-focused supercomputer recently earned a spot on the Top500 list, ranking at number 159 for raw performance and number 76 for energy efficiency. Among public universities in the United States, Redtail holds the fifth position, placing the institution in a competitive category alongside top-tier research systems.
This project represents a 50 million dollar public-private partnership involving the state of Utah and the Huntsman Family Foundation. Built using infrastructure from HPE and technologies from NVIDIA, the machine supports the university's Pro-Human AI Initiative. It aims to provide computing power for research across agriculture, aerospace, manufacturing, and health sciences.
University President Taylor Randall describes the system as a core component of the state's technical future. The project moves beyond pure speed, focusing on the practical application of AI to solve problems. Unlike systems restricted to specific laboratories, Redtail is designed to be accessible to students, entrepreneurs, and researchers throughout the state. It is the first time the university has appeared on these global rankings since 2009 and its inaugural entry onto the Green500 list of energy-efficient systems.
The day-to-day operation of the system falls to the Center for High Performance Computing, which has supported research data needs for four decades. The facility will provide more than just raw power, offering training programs and expert support to help users navigate complex AI deployments. This approach is intended to lower the barrier for those who need high-scale computing but may lack the specialized internal teams usually required to manage such hardware.
As the rollout begins, access is currently prioritized for the Utah System of Higher Education. Future plans include expanding this access to a broader range of state users. By combining high-performance hardware with an ecosystem of training and support, the university aims to ensure that the benefits of this investment reach a wide variety of disciplines and public service projects.
