ATG systems are essential for monitoring fuel levels in storage tanks, yet many units previously sat exposed on the open internet with default credentials or outdated firmware. These devices act as a bridge into larger operational technology networks. Security researchers identified these systems as prime targets for unauthorized access that could disrupt fuel supply chains or lead to environmental monitoring failures.
The decline in exposure suggests that facility managers and utility operators took the recent government guidance seriously. By removing these devices from public view or implementing firewalls, organizations have reduced the attack surface available to threat actors.
