Samsung officially ended major software support for the Galaxy S22 series, leaving owners stuck after the final One UI update. While official channels have closed, the open-source community provides a path forward. LineageOS 23 nightly builds are now available for the base Galaxy S22, the S22 Plus, and the S22 Ultra.
This release brings Android 16 to the hardware, but the implications go further. Because LineageOS operates independently of Samsung’s update cycle, this development creates an unofficial route for the devices to receive Android 17. For owners of the S22 series, which launched in 2022, this is a significant extension of the device's functional life.
The S22 series faced scrutiny in the past, including a legal dispute regarding the Game Optimizing Service that throttled performance. Despite that history, the hardware remains capable for standard daily tasks. By moving to a custom ROM, users can bypass the manufacturer's limitations on software versions.
This move ensures that the S22 lineup does not become obsolete simply because the manufacturer stopped providing updates. While custom ROM installation requires technical familiarity, it offers a distinct alternative to purchasing a new device when the only current barrier is an outdated operating system.
