Google is introducing a new feature for its digital wallet that allows parents to provide children and teens with access to mobile payments. This functionality enables kids to use NFC-enabled Android phones or Wear OS watches to make purchases at retail stores.
Parents manage the experience through the Family Link application. They can set specific spending limits and track transactions in real time as they occur. If a device is lost or misplaced, the parent has the ability to lock or unlock the balance from their own account immediately. This system is designed to provide financial oversight without the immediate requirement of opening a formal bank account for the minor.
At the current launch stage, parents fund the balance via manual transfers from their existing accounts. Google confirmed that scheduling automated, regular payments is a feature arriving in the near future. This release makes the digital payment capabilities for Google users more comparable to the options long provided by other platforms.
This update is available exclusively for users in the United States. It joins existing Google Wallet features for younger users that include access to loyalty cards, library passes, event tickets, and boarding passes.
