Apple is changing core interface navigation on iPhone and iPad with the release of iOS 27. For fifteen years, users have relied on a central top-edge swipe to access the Notification Center. The new software shifts this behavior to prioritize the updated Siri AI system.
When users enable the new Siri AI features, the central swipe gesture is remapped to trigger the assistant. To access the Notification Center, users must now swipe down specifically from the top-left corner of the display. This change marks a significant departure from long-standing navigation habits on Apple mobile devices.
This design adjustment consolidates the notification area into a smaller, specific region on the screen. While early feedback regarding the Siri AI experience remains positive, the change forces a shift in muscle memory for long-time users. There is no current setting to revert the swipe gesture to its previous configuration, meaning users must adapt to the new layout.
Apple has previously adjusted navigation gestures, most notably with the introduction of the iPhone X when the Control Center moved from the bottom swipe to a top-right corner gesture. The shift in iOS 27 follows a similar pattern of centralizing interface controls as the system integrates more advanced artificial intelligence features.
