Apple plans to release its foldable device, the iPhone Ultra, in a fashion that mimics the 2017 iPhone X launch. According to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, manufacturing constraints currently limit initial production numbers for the new handset. While Apple will likely announce the iPhone Ultra alongside the standard iPhone 18 Pro models this September, the foldable model will see a delayed retail release.
This staggered rollout follows the pattern set by the original iPhone X. Back in 2017, Apple introduced the iPhone X alongside the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus in September, but customers waited until late October to place pre-orders. Current reports indicate a similar timeline, with potential pre-orders for the iPhone Ultra occurring in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Pricing for the new foldable is expected to start between $2,299 and $2,499. Analyst projections suggest high demand will outpace the initial supply, as Apple anticipates shipping roughly 7 to 8 million units throughout the year. This contrasts with the 20 to 22 million units expected for the combined iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Prospective buyers should prepare for significant delivery delays if they intend to purchase the device shortly after pre-orders open.
Supply chain intelligence confirms that the device will feature a book-style design. The hardware is expected to include a 5.5-inch outer display and a larger 7.8-inch inner screen. These specifications suggest that the company intends to position the device as a high-end alternative within the smartphone market.
