Meta has released Horizon OS 2.7, a significant update for the Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This software deployment introduces new capabilities aimed at both gaming versatility and display performance. Users can now access a native Gamepad Emulation mode for Touch Plus controllers. This feature allows individuals to map gamepad inputs directly to their VR hardware. It bridges the gap for users who lack a physical Xbox or PC-compatible controller while navigating 2D gaming interfaces like Steam Link.

Expanded Display Capabilities

The update significantly pushes the technical limits of the Quest 3 display. While the headset previously capped out at 120 Hz, Horizon OS 2.7 enables refresh rates up to 207 Hz via standard APIs. For users comfortable with more technical configurations, those in Developer Mode can push the panel to 240 Hz using specific ADB commands. This functionality is exclusive to the Quest 3 hardware and is not available on the Quest 3S.

Meta implements these higher frame rates through a process known as display scaling. This method renders frames at lower resolutions before upscaling them to the native panel resolution. The company warns that this trade-off results in slightly reduced image quality, particularly when displaying thin text or geometry. Motion blur characteristics also shift noticeably once users cross the 144 Hz threshold. Despite these caveats, the added fluidity provides a distinct performance tier for enthusiasts seeking the highest possible refresh rates in supported titles.

Interface Adjustments and App Consolidation

Beyond hardware-focused features, Meta has updated the user interface to improve accessibility and readability. A new size section in the display settings allows users to adjust the relative scale of all windows and interface elements. This change offers a practical solution for those who find default window sizes too small or difficult to manage within a virtual workspace.

Meta also rebranded its Remote Desktop application to Virtual Display. This application now incorporates the functionality previously found in the standalone HDMI Link app. Connecting an HDMI-to-USB-C capture card to a headset now triggers the Virtual Display app directly. Meta signaled that the standalone HDMI Link application will phase out soon, steering all users toward this consolidated platform for screen-mirroring tasks.

Industry Context and Hardware Outlook

These updates arrive amid ongoing speculation regarding the future of Meta’s hardware lineup. CTO Andrew Bosworth indicated earlier this year that significant revisions to existing controller hardware are not currently on the roadmap. Consequently, software-based solutions like this Gamepad Emulation mode serve as the primary bridge for users who want to play non-VR content on their headsets. While Meta continues to push the software boundaries of the Quest 3, the company is also reportedly working on multiple next-generation headset projects.
