Back in 2016, virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive defined the conversation around wearable technology. These devices often relied on controlled demonstrations at film festivals or tech conferences where users understood the boundaries of their experience. People entered these digital spaces by choice and stayed only as long as they wanted. It was a clear, contained environment that prioritized the user experience and allowed for public testing.
Today, the conversation has shifted toward smart glasses and the integration of artificial intelligence into daily accessories. Many people now view these wearables with suspicion, labeling them as invasive surveillance tools rather than useful computing devices. This reaction reflects a failure by companies like Meta to establish the same social agreements that allowed virtual reality to gain traction. Unlike the contained worlds of early virtual reality, smart glasses operate in public, often leaving bystanders unsure if they are being recorded or watched.
