Meta Unlocks High Refresh Rates for Quest 3
Meta recently deployed a software update for the Quest 3 that pushes the headset display refresh rate to 240Hz. This release via Horizon OS 2.7 allows users to reach 207Hz at full resolution. For those in developer mode, the display hits 240Hz. The company restricted this capability to the Quest 3 hardware. It does not extend to the Quest 3S or the older Quest 2, as those units possess different panel specifications. The Quest 3S hardware limits its output to 120Hz.
Getting to the 240Hz threshold requires specific adjustments. Users must enable developer mode and apply display scaling. This process lowers the image resolution before the system performs an upscale to the panel. Regular users will find 207Hz as the ceiling for standard resolution settings. Even with these higher limits, actual performance depends on software. Native applications currently lack the overhead to hit these targets reliably. Quest 2 received experimental 120Hz support back in April 2021, yet few apps successfully maintain that rate today.
Technical Hurdles and Developer Reality
Performance at these high frame rates faces significant technical constraints. Quest Application Spacewarp remains a primary concern for developers. This tool creates synthetic frames to boost visual performance, but it struggles with high-speed targets. Current benchmarks suggest the Snapdragon processor within the Quest 3 cannot handle extrapolation beyond 120 frames per second. Expecting the system to smooth out 207 or 240 frames per second with this technique is not currently possible.
Software developers are finding workarounds for specific use cases. Guy Godin, the developer behind the Virtual Desktop application, recently confirmed support for 144 frames per second. His tool allows users to stream PC VR content to the headset wirelessly. Even here, hardware limits appear. Godin noted that video decoders encounter errors when pushing beyond the 144 FPS mark. While the display can technically refresh faster, the hardware pipeline for incoming data may not support those speeds for standard streaming workflows.
Strategic Positioning in the VR Market
Industry analysts view this change as a signal that the Quest 3 hardware held untapped potential from the start. Meta typically locks performance metrics to ensure stability for average consumers. By releasing these limits now, the company may be preparing for upcoming market shifts. Valve plans to release a standalone headset called Steam Frame. Reports suggest Valve intends to price this unit well above $1,000, significantly higher than the $600 Quest 3.
Competition is heating up as Steam Frame positions itself as a premium device. Valve intends to offer experimental 144Hz support for its hardware. By unlocking higher refresh rates on the Quest 3, Meta creates a narrative that its existing device offers similar performance metrics for a lower price. This move suggests Meta intends to keep the Quest 3 relevant as an affordable alternative to more expensive hardware hitting the market soon. The decision shows how software updates help hardware stay competitive as the product lifecycle matures.
