Steam Frame price increase looms with rising cost of VR headset's Qualcomm chip
Anticipation for the Valve Steam Frame is growing, but potential buyers may face higher costs upon release. Recent reports indicate that Qualcomm plans to increase prices for its Snapdragon chips by a double-digit percentage starting September 1, which directly impacts the system-on-chip used in the upcoming headset.
This pricing shift creates a difficult situation for Valve. The company previously aimed to release the device at a price point lower than its predecessor, the Valve Index, which retailed for $999. Early projections suggested a target of around $800, but industry analysts now view a price above $1,000 as more realistic given these component cost pressures.
Component supply issues have already delayed the launch of the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame. AI data centers have prioritized these same memory and storage components, creating a supply bottleneck. While Valve has accepted recent shipments, the pressure to maintain affordable pricing while covering rising BOM costs remains a significant challenge for the hardware team.
Other manufacturers in the virtual reality market have already adjusted to these pressures. For example, Meta increased the prices of its Quest 3 and 3S models by $50 to $100 earlier this year. Because the Steam Frame uses higher-end components like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and 16 GB of LPDDR5X memory, it is more vulnerable to these market-wide hardware cost fluctuations.
