Steam Link Update for Quest Headsets
Valve has released an update for its Steam Link application on the Meta Quest platform that introduces wired USB-C connectivity. This change marks a shift for the app, which previously relied solely on wireless streaming to connect Quest headsets to a PC. The update, identified as version 2.17.8, arrived in public beta form on September 3, 2026.
Data miner and leaker Luna identified the inclusion of USB streaming within the patch notes. The update allows users to bypass wireless network limitations by establishing a direct physical connection between the headset and the computer. This move addresses potential performance bottlenecks caused by congested home WiFi networks.
Implementation and Access Requirements
To use this new feature, users must navigate through several beta channels. First, they need to subscribe to the public beta version of the Steam Link app via the Horizon Store. Once the app is updated, users must also opt into the SteamVR beta branch. Finally, the user needs to join the Steam Client Beta within the Steam desktop application itself.
Valve has not released a specific list of compatible cables, but the industry standard suggests using a high-quality USB 3.0 or higher cable. A length of roughly five meters is generally recommended to provide enough range for room-scale play. These cables are widely available and often cost under $20.
The Competitive Landscape of PC VR
This update arrives as Meta faces pressure from the upcoming Steam Frame hardware. Market competition is heating up, with Meta recently pushing a software update that allows the Quest 3 to operate at refresh rates up to 240Hz. This figure exceeds the 144Hz target previously associated with the pending Steam Frame hardware.
Established third-party software like Virtual Desktop continues to evolve as well. That app recently received its own updates to support higher frame rates on Quest hardware. By adding wired support, Valve is closing the functionality gap between its official tool and these independent alternatives. The broader VR market is currently in a state of rapid change, and users stand to gain as platforms trade improvements in speed, latency, and connectivity options.
