Berlin police kill suspect in Pride festival attack after manhunt

Berlin police shot and killed the suspect in the Pride festival attack on Sunday. The 21-year-old man died after a confrontation with special police units in the Spandau district of the city.

Authorities located the individual at an allotment garden complex on Sunday evening. According to police reports, he rushed at officers with a knife, which forced them to open fire. Firefighters attempted to provide medical assistance, but he died at the scene.

This incident follows a lethal attack on Saturday near Brandenburg Gate. Officials stated that a vehicle was driven into a crowd, killing one woman and injuring 29 other people. Among the wounded, three individuals remain in life-threatening condition, while eight others suffered serious injuries.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the event as an Islamist attack. The suspect was a German citizen with a Lebanese background who was previously known to law enforcement for prior criminal activities.

Political leaders expressed condemnation of the violence. Chancellor Friedrich Merz labeled the act as heinous, noting that it represents an attack on society itself. Officials emphasized that the Pride parade was intended to be a public demonstration of freedom and equality.
