The government of Qatar issued a formal denial today regarding claims made by Iran that three of its military pilots remain in Qatari custody. This dispute stems from a combat mission that occurred on March 2, 2026, during the early days of the conflict between the United States and Iran.
Brigadier General Mohammad Bagherzadeh, representing Iran, addressed a letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross asserting that pilots Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Imran Behroshian have been held for six months. Iran maintains that these men were captured after ejecting from their Su-24 fighter jets during an operation directed at a Qatari military installation. Tehran further alleges that the detainees have been denied communication with their families and that their basic legal rights are being ignored.
In response, Qatari foreign affairs spokesperson Majed Mohammed Al Ansari stated that the initial incident involved a breach of Qatari airspace. Qatar maintains that its forces acted to defend their territory under international law. According to Al Ansari, search and rescue teams recovered the remains of one pilot, Majid Kazemi, and attempted to coordinate the return of those remains to Iranian authorities. Qatar denies holding any living pilots from the mission.
Diplomatic friction continues as Iran demands an independent fact-finding mission enter Qatar to verify the fate of the missing crew. Qatar reports that an invitation for an Iranian delegation to review their search and rescue findings was extended in April, yet they claim Iran has not provided a response to that offer. The situation remains a point of contention as both nations dispute the events of that day in March.
