Accounting startup Rillet has reached unicorn status. The company recently secured a $100 million Series C funding round, pushing its total valuation to $1 billion. This marks a significant milestone for a firm that only launched publicly two years ago. Investors in the round include ICONIQ, Sequoia Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz.

Founder and CEO Nicolas Kopp explains that the platform exists to address the burnout common among finance professionals. By using artificial intelligence to handle repetitive data tasks, the software allows chief financial officers to move away from manual spreadsheet management. Kopp states that his goal is to provide finance teams more time for high-level strategy rather than focusing on daily accounting labor.

Rillet currently serves more than 600 customers. While the client base initially grew through the technology sector, 40 percent of users now operate in other industries, including waste recycling and entertainment. The company reports that its agents allow businesses to manage significant scale with very small finance departments, a change that differentiates it from traditional enterprise resource planning providers.

The firm has established an alliance with EY and maintains partnerships with multiple accounting firms to build credibility. Kopp credits the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence models for the speed of Rillet’s development. He notes that tasks which formerly occupied a full day now finish in minutes, allowing engineers to release features at a much faster pace.
