Long-Contested Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Gets Opening Date

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has announced that the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open on December 11. The museum features 30 galleries on Saadiyat Island and showcases art produced since 1960. Frank Gehry designed the structure, which joins other institutions including the Zayed National Museum in the local cultural district.

Mariët Westermann, the current director and CEO, stated that the collection focuses on both local and international works. The exhibition plan highlights themes such as storytelling, painting, and moving images from various continents.

The project faces significant controversy regarding its development. For over 16 years, the Gulf Labor Coalition has raised concerns about the treatment of migrant workers during the construction process. Activists argue that labor violations remain unaddressed despite ongoing pressure on the foundation.

In 2015, the Gulf Ultra Luxury Faction occupied the Guggenheim museum space in New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice to demand better conditions for those working on the Abu Dhabi site. Co-founder Andrew Ross recently noted that these issues persist as the museum prepares for its public debut. The Guggenheim Foundation has not provided a response to these specific claims following the announcement of the opening date.
