Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially secured its place in cinematic history. Universal Pictures confirmed that the film reached $1.352 billion in global ticket sales, officially surpassing the $1.338 billion earned by Deadpool & Wolverine. This shift in the record books moves the mythological epic to the top spot as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
The project features a cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson. Since its release on July 17, the movie has maintained a strong presence in theaters worldwide. It has also set a personal record for its lead actors as the highest-grossing film of their respective careers, while standing as the most successful Imax release in the history of the format.
Ryan Reynolds, who starred in the previous record-holder, acknowledged the milestone on social media. He posted a lighthearted congratulatory note to the production team. He highlighted the connection between the title and the vehicle his character used in his own film, stating that the Odyssey is one hell of a car.
This success contributes to a profitable summer season for the industry. Domestic box office totals reached $4.24 billion as of late August, representing a significant increase over the previous year. While the 2013 record of $4.75 billion remains the benchmark, the performance of major titles this year shows the continued strength of the theatrical market.
