FX and Hulu have greenlit a new limited series titled Legends. This production brings back the core cast of Sons of Anarchy for a meta-thriller that plays with the line between television and reality. Charlie Hunnam leads the project as both an actor and writer, marking a return to the franchise that made him a household name between 2008 and 2014.
The plot follows the actors from the original crime drama as they gather for a fan convention years after the show ended. While the premise starts as a reunion, the story shifts when the group encounters a threat that forces them into a situation far more dangerous than the fictional conflicts they portrayed on screen. This narrative approach allows the production to reunite beloved characters even though most met their ends in the original series finale.
Joining Hunnam for this project are original cast members including Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. The series was developed by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff. It is produced by FX Productions and 20th Television. While the original series creator Kurt Sutter is not involved, the project maintains strong connections to the network that launched the record-breaking motorcycle club drama.
Hunnam recently earned an Emmy nomination for his work in Monster: The Ed Gein Story and is currently working on an adaptation of the John le Carré novel Legacy of Spies. This new limited series represents a major creative pivot for the actor. By utilizing a meta-fictional structure, the production team bypasses the continuity issues typically faced when reviving a series where the main cast was written off in previous seasons. Production details for Legends will follow in the coming weeks.
