Colombian naval authorities have intercepted a fishing vessel near the protected Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary. During the operation, officials seized approximately 1,764 pounds of marine animals suspected of being taken illegally from the reserve. Three Ecuadorian citizens were found on the boat and are currently in the custody of the Judicial Police for further investigation.
The Malpelo sanctuary serves as a critical marine ecosystem known for its underwater mountains and diverse species, including humpback whales and various shark populations. Despite its status as a protected area, the reserve remains a target for illegal fishing activities that threaten local biodiversity.
