Elon Musk has dismissed recent reports claiming Tesla intends to sell its Gigafactory Shanghai operations. The rumors surfaced following a report that suggested the company might offload its China business to support a potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX. Musk rejected the claims outright, labeling the story as fake news and asserting that such a transaction has never been part of any internal discussion.
Gigafactory Shanghai remains a central pillar of Tesla’s manufacturing strategy. Beyond meeting the high demand within the Chinese automotive market, the site serves as a vital export hub for vehicles delivered to various regions across Asia and Europe. Maintaining a physical presence in China provides the company with direct access to one of the largest vehicle markets on the planet, making the prospect of a full divestiture highly unlikely from an operational standpoint.
While speculation regarding a union between Tesla and SpaceX continues to circulate among analysts, these reports remain unverified. As SpaceX recently completed its move to go public, observers have theorized about a long-term plan to bring Musk’s various ventures under a single corporate umbrella. Despite the noise from financial media, the current focus remains on manufacturing volume and technological development.
In related developments, Tesla is scaling its internal capabilities in other sectors. Executives have confirmed a target production capacity of ten million Optimus humanoid robots annually once the second production line at Giga Texas reaches full volume. This represents a significant shift in resource allocation, underscored by the recent decision to end production of the Model S and Model X to clear floor space at the Fremont facility for robot assembly.
Musk also continues to signal that the pace of advancement in artificial intelligence is accelerating rapidly. He suggests that the state of AI two years from now will appear drastically different from current capabilities, pointing to the rapid evolution of image and video generation tools as evidence of this trajectory. As the company moves toward higher levels of autonomy and robotics, the focus remains on meeting these aggressive production and development milestones.
