NASA’s Curiosity rover continues to produce remarkable findings on Mars. As it ascended the Valle Grande valley this past June, the rover captured images of a landscape defined by extensive, honeycomb-like textures. Scientists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirm these geometric features, known as polygonal fractures, cover a significant area and even wrap around a nearby six-meter-tall geological formation called Miraflores.
While smaller patches of these shapes have appeared in previous missions, the scale of this discovery is new. The rover team is currently analyzing the chemical makeup and specific geometry of these structures to determine their origin. Potential explanations for these patterns include ancient mud cracks, thermal cycles involving heat and cold, or the compression of sediment that forced water out during earlier geological periods.
Curiosity has operated on the Martian surface since 2012. Throughout its fourteen-year mission, the rover has identified critical evidence of a habitable environment in Mars’ distant past. Previous findings include carbon-based molecules and chemical markers that indicate the planet once held the liquid water and necessary nutrients to support microbial life.
As the mission progresses up the lower foothills of Mount Sharp, the team continues to examine the surface for further geological clues. Each new site offers data that helps researchers refine their understanding of how the Martian environment changed over billions of years.
