NASA has officially abandoned the effort to rescue the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The plan to use a commercial spacecraft to boost the aging telescope into a higher orbit ended when the repair mission encountered significant control issues.
NASA and Katalyst Space confirmed that the Link spacecraft is unable to perform the necessary maneuver to save the telescope from its decaying orbit. While this mission carried a $30 million price tag and sought to keep the long-serving satellite operational, technical barriers made the rescue impossible. The Swift observatory, which launched in 2004 to study gamma-ray bursts, has faced increased atmospheric drag due to recent solar activity.
Rather than attempting the boost, the mission will now pivot to proximity operations. The team intends to use the Link spacecraft to collect technical data on how future space vehicles might interact with other assets. NASA officials stated that the risks involved in this first-of-its-kind attempt were understood from the start.
This outcome closes the door on extending the life of a telescope that successfully transitioned from a specialized instrument to a broad scientific tool. The focus now shifts toward extracting whatever value remains from the remaining flight time before the telescope re-enters the atmosphere.
