NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies have officially ended their attempt to rescue the aging Swift gamma-ray telescope. The mission aimed to use a robotic spacecraft named Link to dock with the observatory and boost it into a safer, higher orbit. Unfortunately, technical failures on the Link satellite forced the team to stand down.
Launched on July 3, the Link spacecraft was intended to act as a repair vessel. It carried robotic arms and thrusters designed for complex proximity operations in space. Just weeks after launch, the satellite suffered a series of malfunctions, including the loss of two reaction wheels needed for orientation. This loss of control made the precise maneuvers required for a docking attempt impossible.
Despite this outcome, the project provided significant data. The team managed to design and launch the experimental spacecraft in nine months, a record-setting timeline for this type of technology. NASA officials noted that the mission allowed the agency to test new ways of managing risk in space development. The data collected will help inform future servicing missions even though the primary rescue goal remains unmet.
The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory remains in orbit but continues to lose altitude. Without the planned boost, the telescope is expected to reenter the atmosphere and burn up later this year. Swift has served for over two decades, far exceeding its original design life. Astronomers have relied on it to study high-energy events like gamma-ray bursts throughout its tenure.
Katalyst currently plans to use its remaining time in space to perform a demonstration of its navigation systems. This allows the company to gather more information about how their technology performs in real-world conditions. While the telescope cannot be saved, the lessons learned from this mission will influence how private companies and space agencies approach complex satellite servicing in the future.
