NASA has officially canceled the mission to rescue the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The telescope, which monitors gamma-ray bursts, faces an inevitable re-entry into Earth's atmosphere later this year as its orbit decays due to recent solar activity. Originally, the agency tasked Katalyst Space and its LINK spacecraft with docking to the observatory to push it into a higher, more stable orbit.

The decision to abort the maneuver follows persistent attitude control issues on the LINK spacecraft. These problems surfaced in late July and caused the vessel to spin while struggling to maintain proper orientation. These technical setbacks also resulted in intermittent communications and damage to the thruster system, making a successful docking attempt unfeasible.

While the primary goal of extending the life of the Swift Observatory is no longer possible, the mission is not a total loss. NASA and Katalyst intend to proceed with a rendezvous operation to collect data on the approach. This information will help engineers refine procedures for future satellite servicing missions.

Launched in 2004, the Swift Observatory became a vital tool for responding to sudden cosmic events. NASA acknowledges this attempt was high-risk, as the team had less than a year to develop the rescue technology. Moving forward, the agency plans to integrate the lessons from this project into future efforts to maintain space assets, as they transition toward new methods for rapid reaction to cosmic phenomena.
