A 14-foot great hammerhead shark washed ashore on the north end of Carolina Beach this past Sunday. The North Carolina Shark Conservancy first received reports of the shark in the surf around 3 a.m. The animal drifted back into the ocean before it returned to the shoreline later that afternoon.
Due to the significant size of the shark, a coordinated effort took place to move the animal. Personnel from Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue, the Carolina Beach Fire Department, and the Carolina Beach Police Department worked together to bring the shark fully onto the beach for assessment.
Experts confirmed the shark was already dead when emergency crews retrieved it. While sightings of large marine life generate significant interest, this incident highlights the reality of coastal wildlife events. Local authorities managed the situation to ensure public safety and to allow for proper handling of the remains.
