Beachgoers at the north end of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, discovered a large female scalloped hammerhead shark washed ashore on Sunday afternoon. The animal, measuring 14 feet in length, was found dead by those visiting the coast.
Local authorities, including Ocean Rescue, the Carolina Beach Fire Department, and the police department, collaborated to move the shark from the water onto the sand. Once the area was secure, researchers from the North Carolina Shark Conservancy arrived to conduct an examination of the animal. They performed a workup to gather vital measurements and collect necessary tissue samples for further study.
While the exact cause of death remains unclear, preliminary observations by experts point toward potential interactions with fishing equipment. Researchers identified a deep cut at the base of the tail fin and a puncture mark near the shark’s jaw. These findings are currently being reviewed to determine if they contributed to the shark's death.
Following the assessment by the conservancy, local officials removed the carcass from the beach for proper disposal. The event drew attention from the public as emergency teams managed the site throughout the afternoon.
