Percy, a subadult great white shark, recently appeared just 14 miles off the coast of Long Island. The shark was spotted near Ocean Beach, exactly one year after researchers tagged him. Tracking data from OCEARCH shows that the shark has traveled over 4,600 miles since last July.
Researchers tagged the shark in 2025 near Nova Scotia as part of a collaborative study. At the time of tagging, he measured nine feet, nine inches and weighed 432 pounds. His movement patterns provide data for scientists studying the seasonal habits of young white sharks in the North Atlantic.
In less than 24 hours before the Long Island sighting, the shark was tracked near Sea Isle City, New Jersey. These rapid movements are common as sharks travel along the coast. Scientists believe this specific animal is currently heading toward cooler waters further north.
The research effort involves monitoring more than 400 animals along the Atlantic coast. The data collected helps organizations understand migration routes and behavioral patterns.
