A young bald eagle is flying free again after a month of recovery from injuries. The story began on June 30 when Kentucky State Police received reports of a young bird in distress near Collins Lane in the city of Corbin.
Trooper Trey Lovins responded to the call and secured the eagle before transporting it to the Lake Cumberland Wildlife Refuge and Liberty Nature Center in Somerset. The staff there provided medical care to the bird for four weeks.
On Friday, the eagle was released back into its natural habitat on the shores of Laurel Lake near Holly Bay Beach. The team at the refuge and officers from the Kentucky State Police attended the release.
In recognition of the effort made during the initial rescue, officials decided to name the bird Trooper. The eagle is now back in the wild following a successful rehabilitation process.
