Her legacy remains a major part of the Big Bear community. Supporters recently united to protect the land near her nest, reaching a fundraising goal of $10 million to ensure the area stays wild. While it is unclear what will happen to Shadow or the territory they defended together, Jackie’s impact on conservation awareness continues to resonate with her fans.
Wildlife officials are now working to learn more about her illness. Her remains were transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for further study.
