Rutgers dominates Peru 101-51 in FISU America Games opener
Rutgers Women’s Basketball made a dominant statement in their opening game of the FISU America Games. The Scarlet Knights defeated Peru with a final score of 101-51 on Wednesday in Lima. This game marks the first victory for the team under the leadership of head coach Gary Redus II.
The Scarlet Knights established control early, building a 33-11 lead by the end of the first quarter. Despite challenges with travel schedules leading up to the game, the roster performed well. Ten players saw action and contributed to the offensive output. Zennia Thomas led the team with 29 points, showcasing versatility as a frontcourt scorer and rebounder.
Freshman guard Chikae Desdunes provided a strong performance in her collegiate debut, finishing with 18 points, including four shots from behind the arc. Sophomore forward PreciousGem Wheeler added value with rim protection and rebounding efforts. Transfers Mia and Mya Pauldo also made significant contributions in their first appearance for the program, helping the team maintain a 62-24 halftime advantage.
Rutgers utilized their size and length to generate points in the paint and create second-chance opportunities on the offensive glass. This up-tempo approach allowed the Scarlet Knights to control the pace of the game. The team prepares for their next Group Stage matchup against Argentina on Thursday at noon ET.
