Mayfield felt 'disrespected' and 'undervalued' by Buccaneers' offers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield stated Thursday that he feels disrespected and undervalued following unsuccessful contract negotiations with the team. Mayfield had previously set a deadline for a new deal to be reached by the start of training camp, but both sides remain apart on key terms.

Mayfield expressed disappointment regarding the specific offers provided by the organization. He noted that the team proposed a two-year extension, which he found unappealing compared to his desire for a long-term commitment. Furthermore, Mayfield indicated that the guaranteed money presented in those offers fell far short of his valuation as a franchise quarterback.

Addressing the media, Mayfield shared that he considers himself a top-tier player and believes his performance on the field warrants compensation consistent with that status. He clarified that he is not looking to reset the market, but simply wants recognition for his contributions to the franchise, including back-to-back NFC South titles in 2023 and 2024.

All formal contract discussions are now suspended until after the 2026 season ends. Mayfield emphasized that he will focus entirely on football for the remainder of the year. He stated that he intends to remain professional and avoid any distractions, including holdouts, despite his frustration with the stalled talks.

In addition to his own situation, Mayfield used his platform to speak on behalf of teammate Vita Vea. The defensive tackle recently requested a trade after failing to reach a new deal. Mayfield described Vea as the anchor of the defense and expressed his hope that the team resolves that matter as well.
