Star RBs Robinson, Gibbs appear to be hold-ins while seeking deals

Star running backs Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs are not participating in the opening practices of their respective team training camps. Both players are reportedly holding in while they engage in ongoing contract negotiations with the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions.

Both the Lions and Falcons previously exercised the fifth-year options on their respective rookie deals, keeping the players under contract through the 2027 season. Despite being under contract, both parties are pursuing new long-term agreements. Expectations across the league suggest both players seek to reset the current market value for running backs.

Saquon Barkley currently holds the record for the highest-paid running back in the league with an average annual value of $20.6 million. Robinson and Gibbs represent two of the most productive offensive weapons in the NFL. Robinson earned first-team All-Pro honors last season after leading the league in rushing yards and scrimmage yards. Since being drafted in 2023, he has accumulated over 5,600 all-purpose yards.

Gibbs has become a central part of the Detroit offense, earning Pro Bowl selections in each of his first three seasons. Known for his versatility as both a runner and a receiver, Gibbs has recorded 49 total touchdowns and over 5,000 scrimmage yards during his professional career.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the situation during Wednesday morning’s media availability. He stated that the process is ongoing and involves both sides working toward a solution, though no specific timeline for a new deal was provided. For now, both teams begin their preparation for the season without two of their most significant offensive contributors on the field.
