Commanders fire TE coach Ben Steele following DWI charge

The Washington Commanders have officially terminated tight ends coach Ben Steele. The organization made this decision following a charge for driving while intoxicated that occurred on June 7 in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Steele was initially placed on leave by the team after the arrest. He missed the final two organized team activity sessions and the subsequent minicamp. The organization cited a violation of team policy as the reasoning for his departure, which comes just two days before the start of training camp.

Following the arrest, the coaching staff adjusted its operations to cover the position group. David Raih, who previously served as tight ends coach for two years before moving into a pass game coordinator role, has been overseeing the group alongside offensive assistant Wes Welker.

Steele joined the Commanders this past offseason after spending the previous three years with the Arizona Cardinals. His professional history includes coaching positions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and Atlanta Falcons. He also spent time as a player across six different NFL organizations between 2001 and 2006.
